“At least as a single woman, I had time to pursue my own interests, read voraciously, and travel when opportunity presented.”
― Tasha Alexander
If there’s one lesson my parents instilled in me, it’s this: “The world is bigger than your own backyard.” From a young age, I’ve dreamed of exploring our planet’s vast and beautiful expanses, full of new and exciting experiences.
Growing up with parents who loved to travel, I was fortunate to spend many childhood holidays on road trips and at campsites around Southern Africa. Eventually, we took to the skies for a memorable vacation at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, in December 2004. It was the first taste of international travel for my sister and me—a thrilling experience, though just another adventure for our seasoned jet-setting mom.
“No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow.”
― Lin Yutang
After that, the international travel bug bit me hard. I devoured travel books, spent hours researching destinations, and dreamed of all the places I would visit “one day.” You know that one day we all talk about it. Well, I finally decided to turn one day into a concrete plan on the eve of my 25th birthday. That day would be December 1, 2011.
2011 wasn’t off to the best start—workplace politics, financial pressures, and the challenges of everyday life were beginning to take their toll. I felt stuck in an uncomfortable comfort zone. I’m sure you know the feeling. It’s that nagging sense that something needs to change.
“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
― Lao Tzu
By June, I knew I needed to make a change. I decided to return to school and continue my tertiary studies as a correspondence student—a move that felt like a significant first step. Encouraged by this progress, I knew I had to take another step. No more waiting around for friends and their “one day…” stories. I booked a spot on Contiki’s European Magic Winter Tour—a whirlwind adventure that started and ended in London’s Camden Town.
To coordinate travel, flights, and the tour, I booked an additional two nights in London: one before and one after the tour. And just like that, this shy, nerdy girl was off on a solo European adventure.
From December 1st to 13th, 2011, I explored some of Europe’s most iconic destinations, making memories that would last a lifetime. It was a journey of self-discovery, growth, and unforgettable experiences.
